Over-Water Hotel

The Edgewater is Seattle’s only over-water hotel, built on pilings over Elliott Bay at Pier 67, 2411 Alaskan Way, on the downtown waterfront. It opened in 1962 for the Century 21 World’s Fair, the same exposition that produced the Space Needle, and has 223 guest rooms and suites, every one with a gas fireplace. Inside, the look is a rustic Pacific Northwest lodge: natural wood, stone and warm earth tones. Over-water rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows onto the bay, the Olympic Mountains and passing maritime traffic, and several have balconies with Adirondack chairs.

On the water. The hotel is built on the pier structure at Pier 67, over Elliott Bay, so over-water guest rooms and Six Seven Restaurant sit directly above Puget Sound. That is the difference between The Edgewater and a waterfront hotel that faces the water from land. Over-water rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, views of the Olympic Mountains and a front seat on the maritime traffic. City-view rooms look the other way, at the Seattle skyline. One thing to know before booking: the hotel sits along one of Seattle’s rail lines, so occasional train sounds come with the setting.

Yes. The Beatles came to Seattle in 1964 during their first world tour, and the hotel installed cyclone fencing to keep the crowds back. During that stay a photo of the band fishing from the window of their suite was captured, and that image is why the hotel sits in rock-and-roll history. You can book the same suite. Led Zeppelin were banned in 1973 and welcomed back years later. Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Ray Charles, Johnny Cash, David Bowie, Neil Young, Kurt Cobain, Chris Cornell and Pearl Jam have all stayed here.

The Edgewater is a boutique luxury waterfront hotel and it is not AAA Four Diamond rated. The Four Diamond property often confused with it is the Edgewater Hotel in Madison, Wisconsin, a different brand and a different company. There is no pool and no full-service spa. There is a 24-hour fitness center on the second floor with free weights and cardio equipment, and the front desk can point you to the hotel’s in-room spa service partners. The $34 daily amenities fee covers The Edgewater ZYBRA bicycles, a complimentary two-hour Orangewood guitar rental, Wi-Fi, the fitness center, record players and albums, a daily local newspaper and local phone calls.
