History & Construction

How It Was Built

With a design conceptualized by Edward E. Carlson and John Graham, Jr., and refined by Victor Steinbrueck, the Space Needle was constructed to withstand winds up to 200 mph and survive a magnitude 9 earthquake. Construction began one year before the World’s Fair and crews worked around the clock until its completion on December 8, 1961.
