The Mariners, Seattle's Major League Baseball team, were originally franchised in 1977 and are part of the American League West. Since 1999, their home has been Safeco Field, in the SoDo District. The team name “Mariners” comes from the prominent maritime culture in Seattle and the Pacific North West region. The team has a long and rich history, including such iconic players as Ken Griffey Jr, Randy Johnson and Edgar Martinez. Frustratingly, for their fans, the Mariners are one of only two current baseball teams to never have reached the World Series.
